Final 360 Video

Coming to the final video I took inspiration from videos such as nature walks to see what they consist of and how they make an impact onto the viewer. After having done my research I am ready to shoot.

Shooting / Planning

This is my chosen place of shooting, it is not too far from the university and it is a great place to go for a walk. I have picked this place mainly because of its naturistic views and small ponds. It helps present my idea of where I feel at home.

I have aimed to shoot on a sunny day where the colours and sky is visible, this is so I can get a good looking shot but it also brings out the beauty in the surrounding nature.

Shots

These are all the shots I got, there is not a lot but that is because I was able to shoot what I wanted. Although towards the end of the shoot it started to get a bit darker and began to cover the sky in grey.

This was not suitable shooting conditions but I had what I needed anyway.

Final Video – “Where I Live”

Finally this is my final piece of work, this video presents where I feel at home or “Where I Live”.

Overall what I have learnt from creating a 360 video is the skills and techniques that go with the production of filming and working on sets. What I liked about the video was that I was able to create a smooth intro that led into my walk. The audio worked as you were able to hear the background noise of the birds. The combination worked well together.

360 Degree Video Development

To begin with we were given the title of ‘Where I Live’, this is going to mainly be focused on the idea of where do you feel at home. Rather than where do you live, its where to you feel mentally or physically at home. To help start I made a mind map to have a layout on things I believe is close to my heart and that I love doing. These are going to be things I will be looking into and gathering inspiration from.

For this I want to be able to present my idea of ‘Where I Live’ by being able to immerse the viewer into this a world I want them to perceive using the GoPro Fusion 360 camera.

MoodBoard

Mind maps

With this starting mind map I have written things that when I am partaking in, I Feel at home or a place I feel like I am happy. On the right side I have put down sports and adventuring, These two are my favourites because I find that when I am playing or doing these things I feel more at peace/happy. In the sports section I have written a few but the two that stands out to me is Basketball and American Football, these two I enjoy the most because i am able to get about and be active. Compared to animals and food the sports and adventures give me the feeling of being at home due to the activities you can do.

Few Ideas

To get a better idea I have written down my areas of interest and put down what I think I will be able to do with each section. With food and animals I can think of a few ways I could implement them into the augmented reality but I feel as if it not as close to my heart compared to sports or adventuring.

Idea Comparison

After deciding that I will focus on Sports or Adventuring I made a quick list to gather some ideas on what I could include how how it could make you feel during the experience.

On the left with American football I came up with the idea of being in the position of the quarterback or another position. Although as this is going to immersive and it would be great that if I was going to take this route of turning it into a interactive experience, I could take the idea and have as if you were watching or a way to make you feel as if you are the player instead. With this It could also be accompanied by switching it around and having the view of the catcher and the ball coming towards the camera.

Similar to the idea before this would be for basketball, you would feel as you were the shooter trying to get the ball in the hoops like a game or either by having the experience of watching the game. If I were to create a interactive app it could let you play the traditional way similar to a funfair type game style where you have to get as many as you can before the timer ends or something similar.

As for the hiking idea this is one of my stronger ideas and one that feels closer to my heart. It would be an immersive hiking/walking experience.

My chosen idea

The idea that I am going to proceed with is the going on a walk/hike. This will be a immersive walking experience and it will show that this is close to my heart and where I feel like I live.

As it would be a lot harder attempting to do a

Research

For my research I have found two examples that I have gathered inspiration from. These kind of videos will be the guideline I will follow as I want this to be a calm and peaceful immersive video.

Virtual Forest Walk

I am going to take inspiration from these examples as they are similar to what I will be doing, I have take notes on how they are setting up the camera as well as how they are using it as they walk.

Woods Walk

With this video you do not really see anybody apart from the start and the main set up for that was it being planted on the ground. This allowed for a more immersive experience.

My AR Development

Coming to the development side of my work, I am going carry on with taking my idea further of creating a experience where the food you find around the kitchen and ones that you would eat every so often.

Infographics Development

After creating my first vison of the infographic I have made one for each of the foods I will show. These will be common foods that will be found in a household.

Going into aero I have imported my first designs into it so I can see how I am going to proceed. The use of this software is new to me but I am getting the hang of it as I am working through.

Changing my Design

I am having to adjust and re-design my infographic because when actually imported and used on the aero app, the text on my graphics became blurred and really pixilated. To get around this I had to re design the layout and so that the text could appear bigger, I have also made it in illustrator first and then exported it to photoshop to where I created a PNG using photoshop.

This worked, however I had a plan to make the picture of the food to stand out and use the depth tool in aero to bring it out from the background/infographic. This was to help engage the viewer but it was not possible as the way to do this was to export it the way I did before when the text was blurred.

Putting it into Practice

3D Modelling

For the next three weeks we will be with Omid going through the tools and basics of Maya. This is to learn the controls and how to create pieces of work in software’s such as Maya.

First week

Starting off was pretty simple, making a cube and manipulating it into a mouldable object.

Using tools such as the emerge and using the move tool I have been able to create an arch by dragging up by the y axis

After creating the arch I used the insert edge loop to add lines along the horizontal axis so that I could add a separate box for the chimney

Second Week

In this week we started off by finding our own building, I chose a New York building because I am a fan of the style and architecture that is present within these properties.

With this we started off my creating the frames of the windows and the surrounding areas using the emerge tool. Once I had done creating one row of windows I do not have to worry as I can copy it onto the next row.

Third Week

In this final third week I had to create the door and the frame so I can finish of the building, I had fun trying this task. I was able to learn more about Maya and the way you can create things in 3D by just starting from a little square box.

In the end this was my result, Overall I am happy with how it turned out as it follows the design measurements and style of the original building. In this process I did have trouble getting the spacing and overall perspective but in the end I was able to fix and achieve it.

AR “Hidden In Plain Sight” Ideas

This set brief is called ‘Hidden In Plain Sight’ and our objective is to bring the things around us to life. Creating this has to be immersive for the viewer, enabling them to think like they are interacting with the things around them whether its there or not.

To help bring my ideas to light in am going to create a mind map so I can better understand where I am going to take this.

MoodBoard

Mindmap

Making this mind map I put down the things that I found fun or interesting and thought of ways I could use this to immerse the viewer into these activities. Starting off with food, I thought of a few ways that I could use this in AR by implementing food around the room and you have to find your favourite ones that you can find. This map is just so I can visualise what I am thinking of doing.

I think that I am going to follow the idea of having to find an object or chosen thing within the experience. Things such as animals, food and other objects that can be discovered.

Research

Ideas

Making this list I wanted to layout what each area can be possibly used in a AR situation. These are things that I have close to my heart but also activities that could immerse the viewer into a new world or game.

With animals and pets I could combine that idea with my adventuring idea by using it as a walk and find as you go. This would be a walking experience where you would need to look around your surroundings and find a certain type of animal or any animals depending what idea I would take.

On the other hand with the area of sports as an idea I could follow the similar idea of having to find the ball or team name/logo. I had an idea of using the sports idea as a game where you would use it to throw the ball or catch using the AR, this would be a hefty task I would think but its has given me the inspiration if I need it in the future.

Idea Refinement

Now I have given my self a few ideas and what guidelines I am going to try and follow I am going to refine my ideas so that I can comedown to one final idea.

Idea 1: This idea consists of two things that I thought would work well, the combination of using Animals/Pets with the activity of hiking/walking. This kind of experience would be aimed towards the people who like to go out on walks or exploring. The main idea is that when you are on walk or hike you could play this app and as you are going along on your journey you can spot and find different animals that would pop up on your screen. While doing this there could be a timer which tests the player to look around and find as many animals as they could before time runs out. I can see this appealing to children as they would be captivated by searching for animals that might be hidden or else.

The small sketch I have drawn presents what I think it could look like while you are on the app. As my drawing skills are not the best I tried to express how it could work by presenting the trees and the animals behind them.

Idea 2: As I have stated before I am going to follow the idea of having to search for the allocated objects. This idea involves the area of sports, this would include the different sports balls and equipment. Depending on how development goes I think I will try to keep the idea of a timer going down so that it can become a sort of game that people can be captured by. This kind of idea would mainly appeal to the sports fans but could be played by anyone.

Idea 3: For the last idea I wanted to include food as an idea because you see a lot of cooking games or similar ideas on the internet. This idea would consist of you finding or going up to food that you have in your kitchen. When you would go up to the foods either an information graphic will come up or something similar. Another idea for this kind of task would be to make it into a game but as I am not so familiar with Areo I will probably go for my simpler idea.

As for the guideline the title is ‘Hidden In Plain Sight’ so I have decided to somewhat follow that title by using my idea of having to find foods or to go up to foods that you would have in your kitchen and info or just a animated graphic would pop up.

Final Idea Decision

Another thought I had on my first idea was that when you are playing the app it could bring up a photo of an animal and you have to find it the exact one. This could give the game a bit more life to it as just having to look for animals could become boring after awhile.

However now that I have given some thought into my different ideas, I can say that the idea that sticks out to me the most is my food idea. The idea is to use augmented reality with household foods such as eggs, bread and other foods you would find and looking at them would bring up information or a little animation.

Target Audience

My target demographic is the people who want to know the calories they will be consuming such as athletes or the people who are aiming to get fit/healthier.

The reason I have chosen this idea and audience is because I my self are aiming to become fitter and more healthier. That is why I want to try and create a experience where you are able to track what you are eating and also what is in it.

Mock Idea Test

After finalising on what I am going to do, I decided to create a few mock up on how the outcome of my idea might look:

Creating these mock ups have given me a better insight on how I am going to proceed with this. What I started with was looking at how the overall graphic visuals would look and how would they be present during this experience.

When thinking of a way to present these food items I wanted it to be clear and be easily read, so to help put this across I chose to use a white box with blue outlining so that the text can stand out from its surroundings and also to be easily spotted. Next I wanted to present what the food is in some sort of graphic, to which I made a box that was transparent apart from the outlines. Then using that I placed an image of the foods in it single form or it as its whole form. This was so that the experience could look more flush and clean but also to add come information and make the scene less boring.

Coming to a conclusion I have chosen my food information idea over my other ideas because this one seems more viable to complete and an idea that I think would push me to learn about how aero works.

Projection Mapping Research & Development

For this brief we were told that the Worcester Light Night Festival in 2021 we would designing and producing an interactive media installation. The focus around this project is the theme of ‘Lockdown’ and would need to produce a mixed reality format that will then be projected onto a scale model of a city campus building. As a group, we will develop of a plan for the projection mapping that will last between 30 – 60 seconds. After that we will then need to shoot and produce content that can be done by video, photographs, audio and graphical assets. we will spend two weeks developing a plan and by the 14th of December we will screen the our final project.

After looking at the brief and getting more information during the lecture i understand that I will have to produce a 30-60 second work piece and use assets to communicate what I am trying to get across to the viewer about issues and lockdown. As we are still in lockdown the choices of being in a group were limited so I decided to stay by my self and work on this alone, Although working in a group could be beneficial with the workload I shall attempt this on my own.

To help were were given a little guideline to start out and give us a bit of direction on how to start out.

Creative Process

Stage 1 Process
week 1Read the Brief through thoroughly and make notes
Identify key requirements
Follow a scheduled
Stage 2Research and Inspiration
week 2Take time to make develop ideas
Make notes, draw, make mind maps and mood boards
Research influential pieces of work/case study’s.
Stage 3Concept refinement
week 3 Take the strongest ideas and develop them further
Continue to research, add inspiration and develop ideas forward
Refine and adapt to the audience
Fit the outcome to the brief

From this method I will try and follow the process so I can try to understand what I will be doing and how I will do it. After reading the brief I found and identified the key requirements I need to follow. these are the following:

  • Design concept – Lockdown
  • A 30s – 60s Projection plan
  • Gathering assets to developed my idea with music, sound and objects
  • Relevant Research

In this list I will look and dive into how I can follow these requirements and also how I can use my ideas to follow these guidelines.

Mind Map

With this mind map I have created I wanted to highlight or find the surface problems that came with lockdown. Challenges such as social restrictions, job unemployment and problems such as mental health. These are all things that have affected on person or another. Creating this has helped me visualize what lockdown had really done and how it has effected people.

After creating my mind map on how lockdown has effected us and pointing out the surface level challenges I decided that I wanted to look at what I will be mainly focusing on during my research and work piece. A few points that I thought I should focus on were mental health problems such as Depression, Anxiety, drug abuse and the mental state decline. I also want to focus on the social restriction aspect such as including the lack of sports/exercise, the lack of places to visit and other normal daily things that we are unable to do during the pandemic.

What I want to get out of my video piece is the idea of how lockdown has effected our mental state and also our physical state, although some people have not been affected as much as others have, I still feel that it has changed our way of living forever.

Ideas

1 – LOST: For this first idea I had a thought that for this one I could focus on just the mental side of lockdown and how it affected someone. This would include how these people might react or be feeling stuck inside or not being able to do what they feels best.

2 – Bankrupt: This idea came to be because of the financial situation that is going on for a lot of people during this time such as the challenges with money, jobs and other things that can be altered or affected by money. I feel with this it could reach the people who think they are on the brink of bankruptcy.

3 – Blown Up: Lastly this third idea is the one I think I like the most as it includes my more focused part of lockdown such as the mental health, financial and social restrictions. Giving the name blown up because going into lockdown and a pandemic has blown up and affected everyone.

Chosen Idea

For my chosen idea I have decided to choose idea 3, the reason I have chosen 3 is because with this idea I am able to incorporate my focused views on lockdown meaning I can implement the mental health, the financial situation and also try and include the social restrictions within my work.

My Audience

As for this project I am having to keep in mind who am I trying to reach and how am I going to connect with them using digital lighting and assets. Project mapping can be used in a number of ways that can enable or provoke emotions if used right, knowing this and having our brief set on the idea of lockdown I can use my own experience and others to create a 30-60 second sequence that will be able to connect to the audience.

Knowing this I am aiming to have my target audience as the people who have been affected mentally by lockdown and the people who have found it hard to cope with. This is why I have chosen to focus on mainly the mental health side of by piece of work.

Research

UCLA Centennial Campaign

Looking for case examples I have come across this video by UCLA where the university created a 3D light and sound production. This was a great presentation and the way they have been able to link a a story and a link such as the university.

Statue of Unity

I have found this one before however I wanted to bring this up again because the way they presented and used the light performance along with a story allowed a captivation and intriguing experience. If you were there to see it, it would have been fantastic as the statue it self it gigantic.

Dr Blighty at Brighton Pavilion

Lastly with this inspiration research video was a production of sound and video that was put on for the Brighton Royal Pavilion for the 50th Brighton festival. This was also apart of the anniversary of the first world war, this shows you that you can use this kind of work to present a serious idea and production.

Development

For this project we were given a outlining of the building we will be using. Looking at this I was able to see that there are 20 windows on the face of the building. Knowing this I will plan to use all of the windows if not all most of them so I can try to present my idea in the best way possible.

As a thought to the work I thought of starting the piece at the bottom of the building and making my way up as the video goes along, this will hopefully make it easier to follow and understand.

If I do not follow this idea my other thought is that I will allocated what room is what such as where is the kitchen, where is the bedroom and as such so that I can plan it everything accordingly.

Having chosen Idea 3 for my main project I started off creating a quick plan/layout of how I will start to create my idea, choosing idea 3 meant that i will be following the objective of bringing mental health and the other aspects of lockdown all together to create a video that can connect to at least the people being affected by these certain area and challenges of lockdown.

Idea 3 Sketch

Because we were given a outlining on the building we will be using I drew a sketch on how the method might look. my drawing ability is not the best but I have drawn it in a way I know how it could be set out.

As you can see from the image I started to plan out the timing of what will happen, this is just to help me visualize what will go on. This might not be the final timings as I might change it throughout the process.

After having a quick sketch I can see that I might take the route of of using the whole front and creating like a brick formation falling down or as such.

Timing and Storyboards

Timing

Coming to the decision of timing I have thought out a way that could work in terms of what I am going to present. I have also used some inspiration from my previous sketch but this time I have altered it to which I think is going to work best.

0 – 5 seconds – A spider web covering the whole house or some of the windows, indicating that it this is the start of the pandemic. Engages the viewer as it it not nice to look at put grabs your attention.

6 – 11 seconds – Windows boarded up with signs/posters of which are linking to social restrictions and rules. presents further the idea of the start of the pandemic and also gives off a dystopian feeling.

12 – 16 seconds – Utility bills or things linking to a financial situation such as furlough and the unemployment problem.

17 – 23 seconds – Shouting or some sort of distress as problems arise as we go though the pandemic.

24 – 30 seconds – Drug scene or icon images with broken windows to try and show drug abuse and homelessness, Showing the stress and dire situation some people have been put through.

30 – 40 seconds – Brick wall would be projected over the front of the house and break/disappear to try and represent getting out of lockdown and getting through the struggles that everyone was faced with.

Storyboard

I have created this storyboard to help demonstrate what I was trying to in vison with what I wanted to do:

With the first two boxes I followed the idea of using spider webs to present the beginning of lockdown. The webs will then fade away and then the signs and wooden boards will appear on the building. These signs will be social distancing posters and things linking to the pandemic to make it look like we were kept in.

I have used a overdue icon image to present the financial situation that people have gone though, this is to try connect with the viewer as someone would have experienced it once though the pandemic. After the stamp I will introduce the bills falling down, this could also be accompanied by money or things that were needed during lockdown such as toilet roll and such.

To try and demonstrate the idea of mental health I have used hands demanding for money while I could also add screaming and other audio to further point out my vision.

Finally the wall will appear and fall down. This is to represent the idea of coming out of lockdown and being able to go to somewhat back to normal

Creating the Building in Maya

From learning how to use and build in the software Maya I have built the building that we are using the template of. I have done this to test my skills but to also see how it could work out.

Projection mapping applications

Real Time Face Tracking & Projection Mapping is an example of successful projection mapping due to the way they are able to make it look like the skin is moving or even butterfly’s flying in front of her face, this could be used for a lot of other things and can be used to grab the audience’s attention.

This could be used to promote things such as products or used for shows so that it can engage with the audiences better and show a unique way to show off designs and projection mapping.

—-

I have watched videos online on projection mapping onto large scale buildings and what i gathered from these projects are that with a big amount of space or a scale building is that they all use this type of technology to produce work that can create unique patterns and geometric shapes along with the buildings structure, but this type of work can also tell a story. It can be used to connect with the viewer in a more unique way and allowing a building to become something completely different.

Statue of Unity – Projection Mapping Show

This case study focuses on the Statue of Unity which symbolises the most prominent leaders of the Indian Independence movement, helping bring together people around India to create a modern political boundary. This statue indicates freedom, being independent and bring one another together.

looking at this case study and what it was used for, I can gather inspiration from how it connects to the viewers and the message behind the piece of work. I found this video to be interesting as the winners of a competition had to create a projection mapping on the largest statue called the “Statue of Unity”. The reason they won was because they produced a story that had meaning to the county. I found this to be inspiring because they created a show that was connecting with the viewers but also any tourists that visit they can get a sense of the country. They were able to use a landmark and a projector to create this work, Through these works we can open up more ideas and ways to connect with one another and also celebrate being were they are today.

Laser Cube DJ Projection Mapping on Buildings – Wicked Lasers

This video caught my eye because of the way they have projected onto the building behind while the DJ is in front. this is different from what we are doing but its given me an idea due to the way in the video the projections are going with the music giving it a better atmosphere as it would just by himself, I thought that if we included music we could map along with the beat or style of the music and could come out well while connecting with the audience. This is not only a way to add some lighting to some beats, it creating a unique atmosphere and environment while connecting with the audience. Not just the last case but In this case study they are also seen to use the lighting on landmarks and buildings also.
